Cape Cod kitchens ask more of cabinetry than most. Salt air, big seasonal humidity swings, and houses that sit closed up for months at a time are hard on finishes, hinges, and particleboard. Cape houses are hard on cabinetry in ways that inland houses are not. Salt air, summer humidity in the 70 to 90 percent range, and a shoulder season where a closed-up house swings through big temperature changes will find the weak point in a cabinet box. Particleboard sides swell at the bottom edge near a dishwasher, cheap hinges corrode, and painted doors on unstable substrates telegraph joints. Plywood boxes and quality hinges cost more up front and are the single easiest place to spend money well.

The second Cape-wide reality is water. A large share of the kitchens we work in sit within a conservation jurisdiction, a flood zone, or both, and a project that moves a sink, adds a window, or changes a footprint can pull in review that adds weeks. None of that stops a cabinet job, but it does change the order in which things should happen. We order cabinets against the permit calendar so that a container of finished cabinetry is not sitting in a garage for two months waiting on a hearing.

Third is scheduling. Trade availability on the Cape tightens sharply from June through August, and cabinet lead times run longer in spring as everyone tries to be finished before the season. Projects that start in the fall generally run smoother and finish faster than the same project started in April.
